An Introduction To
Range Rival
HOME > An Introduction To Range Rival
Day 1 Launch
Our first article is here! This one’s a shorty, but I wanted to take the time to explain what Range Rival hopes to be as a brand, as well as guide you around our existing content spaces! Some of you have been here since our transition to Range Rival in October, and we are proud to kick off the next phase of releasing articles and reviews. Ideally, we hope to create a space that firearm owners of all backgrounds and skill levels can meet to better support the positive aspects of this hobby.
We are going into 2025 as an official USPSA & Multi-Gun Team locally. With additional interest and commitment to participation from non-local users, we may open the team up to those not in our area, given we travel quite a bit as it is!
Our first “actual” article, First Time Gun Buyer’s Guide, follows this one exactly 7 days from now! (April 8th). In the meantime you can give your suggestions on what you’d like to see us talk about or review! Take a quick tour of what we are already doing below.
Education
A condensed space to learn about all aspects of firearm ownership and gear
Competetion
Submit a Drill of the Month run EVERY month via our Discord submissions channel
Socialize
Share your collection and learn more about your firearms from experienced members
Entertainment
2025 is the year we launch our community channel with currated content for you!
Drill of the Month
Every month we compete to see who can run a standardized drill most efficiently. The point of this is to get participation from shooters of all skill levels so we can improve and grow as a group. Long term, we plan to incorporate prizes based on a raffle system so ANYONE can win! Review a couple of the first DOTM challenges to hit RangeRival.com!
Meet Our Authors
While just a small team, we offer a diverse set of skillsets and experience. Make sure to find each creator on their other platforms for supplementary information and content!
With a B.F.A. in both Graphic Design and Digital Imaging, I have always found myself creating or managing small community type projects. I had a great interest in people and curating positive interactions whether it was for a game server or content creation. A few years later, I found a great interest in the firearm community as well as shooting sports specifically.
I created Range Rival with a few other close friends to be that positive, educational space for hobbyist of all backgrounds/skill levels. Additionally I look forward to making life long friends through the sporting aspect. I hope through the content we produce, we help others find that level of not only proficiency, but morality in how we carry ourselves day to day.
Paul Whaley is a guy with an interest in practical and defensive pistol shooting techniques with an eye for quality gear. He has received training from Holistic Solutions Group, John Johnston of Citizens Defense Research, Darryl Bolke, Cecil Birch, and Chuck Haggard. When not trying to become a better shooter, he can be found enjoying a Resident Evil game or listening to Warren Zevon.
I’m super excited to be a part of this community and look forward to utilizing the platform to promote safe and effective firearms usage, as well as share my journey through the competitive and defensive shooting worlds!

AUTHOR'S NOTES | April 1st 2025
Over a year ago I juggled the idea to start this brand with a few friends and am thankful for the progress in preparation we have made during that time. While every week wasn’t a busy week, we really put together something nice to host in depth conversations via our articles and social platforms (Primarily Discord).
I wanted to start off with an “easy” or more broad article to hit the ground running. Truthfully I feel I am still entering the world of firearm education myself and hope to give transparent/well supported research on the articles I do choose to write on. I think we have a responsibility as a community to produce other safe, like minded shooters at the range!
Everyone has different preferences and there is no right answer for everyone. Just beware of public issues regarding any platform you might want to purchase. I personally love Paul Whaley’s (our editor) reviews over at Primer Peak. Even if I had not had the chance to speak with Paul, I feel his articles are in depth, purpose built reviews on a good range of carry platforms mainly.
