DRILL INSTRUCTIONS
For sake of conversation, we are going to refer to this as the B.A.D. drill. There are 5 strings of fire with different par times for each string. This drills to be shot from a holster if possible on string 1. This month we are really going to emphasize SELF DEFENSE shooting and ask that an IWB holster be used for the drill. If you use an OWB holster that is not concealed or do not shoot from concealment with your IWB holster, add .4 seconds of time penalty to string 1. If you can not draw from a holster but are able to pick up from a table/bench, do so and add .6 seconds time penalty on to string 1. Strings 2-4 are shot at a variant of low ready that has the muzzle pointed at the bottom of the target. Take the appropriate amount of time to transition to each string safely, you may re holster your firearm however shoot each string consecutively.
String 1: Shooter begins holstered at 5 yards. On beep, shooter draws and fires 5 rounds freestyle into the target. Par time of 5 seconds
String 2: Starting with the muzzle pointed at bottom of target, Shooter starts from ready at 5 yards, and fires 3 rounds into the target, dominant hand only. Par time of 3 seconds.
String 3: Start again with muzzle aimed at bottom of the target. Same as before, except we are shooting only 2 rounds, non-dominant hand only. Par time of 3 seconds.
String 4: Again with muzzle aimed at bottom of target, Shooter moves back to 7 yards, and ensures that they have 3 rounds loaded into their pistol. Shooter begins at ready, and on beep, fires 3 rounds into the target, performs a slide lock reload, and fires 3 more rounds into target. Par time of 10 seconds.
String 5: You guessed it! With muzzle aimed at bottom of target, Shooter moves back to 10 yards, and begins at ready. On beep, shooter fires 4 rounds freestyle into the target. Par time of 4 seconds.
A passing score of 190/200 or higher with each string under par time will count as a successful submission!
AUTHOR NOTES
The Rangemaster Baseline Assessment drill was devised by Tom Givens of Rangemaster. He made this to be a proper baseline, which means that we have it to compare our skill against. As such, this drill covers many elements of practical handgun shooting, and only really misses out on shooting on the move. My advice is to make sure that you are being accurate, and to not rush the strings of fire. While not generous, we do have time to be deliberate, and to get those hits. I’d recommend working this drill in as a monthly or quarterly drill, to see how you’ve improved (or gotten worse) with certain elements.
