DRILL INSTRUCTIONS

The “Can You SHO & WHO” Drill is a straightforward, low round count exercise that is all about one-handed shooting. Building skill in Strong Hand Only (SHO) & Weak Hand Only (WHO) shooting will make you a better shooter as a whole, and low round count drills make that even easier. Like most of our monthly picks, it’s solo-friendly and easily run on a single target, with minimal setup.

Setting Up the Drill: The “Can You SHO & WHO” is very easy to setup. Our target is the standard B8 repair center target. Paste the target up, and move back to the 8 yard line. This drill is shot from low ready and is only 6 rounds, and can be shot with nearly any handgun, as it is only 3 rounds per string of fire.

Drill Instructions: We’ve got two strings of fire here, which both being pretty similar.

  • String 1: Shooter begins at low ready (45 Degrees), with only the Strong Hand gripping the gun. On timer beep, shooter raises their pistol, and fires 3 rounds into the B8.
  • String 2: Shooter begins at low ready (45 Degrees), with only the Weak Hand gripping the gun. On timer beep, shooter raisers their pistol, and fires 3 rounds into the B8.

Scoring and Penalties: We’re using hit factor scoring. Points ÷ Time = HF. Combine the times and scores between both strings of fire, and perform the HF equation.

  • We’re shooting on the B8 repair center. Any hits on the target count for scoring for a maximum of 60 points total. Any misses off of the target count as a full miss, with no point value.

Summary: The “Can You SHO & WHO” really gets you to work on your one-handed shooting skill. This is something that I’ve found many shooters to be relaxed on, and simple drills like this one will expose that. In the real world, there are many instances where you may only be able to get one hand on the gun, and we should be practicing for that. On top of that, getting good with one-handed shooting will only make you better with two hands on the gun! Get out there and give this drill a try!
