HOME > DRILL OF THE MONTH > 2ND SERVINGS DRILL
DUE DATE : 8/27/2026
Scoring : Hit Factor
ROUND COUNT : 12 Rounds
DISTANCE : 7/20 Yards
TARGETS : 2x USPSA Torso Target
Please read the drill instructions carefully.
DRILL INSTRUCTIONS
Setting Up The Drill: Place two USPSA torso targets downrange. The left target should be placed 7 yards from the firing line. The right target should be placed 20 yards from the firing line.
This is a 12-round rifle drill. It may be completed with any centerfire rifle chambered in .223/5.56 or larger. Pistol caliber carbines chambered in 9mm or larger are also permitted. Rifles chambered in .22 LR are not eligible for official leaderboard scoring.
The shooter will begin with a loaded rifle and one reload carried securely on the belt. Each magazine must contain at least 6 rounds.
Starting Position: Shooter will begin standing with the rifle loaded and held at low ready. The spare magazine must be carried in the shooter’s normal rifle reload position on the belt.
Keep the trigger finger outside the trigger guard and the muzzle pointed safely downrange while awaiting the start signal.
Drill Instructions: Upon the audible start signal, the shooter will engage the targets in the following order:
- Right 20-yard target with 2 rounds
- Left 7-yard target with 2 rounds
- Right 20-yard target with 2 rounds
After completing the first 6 rounds, the shooter must perform a mandatory reload. The shooter will then engage the targets in the following order:
- Left 7-yard target with 2 rounds
- Right 20-yard target with 2 rounds
- Left 7-yard target with 2 rounds
The drill ends after the shooter has fired all 12 required rounds.
Scoring and Handicaps: We are using Hit Factor scoring for this drill. If you are unfamiliar with this scoring system, it is your final point total divided by your time.
Alphas are worth 5 points.
Charlies are worth 3 points.
Deltas are worth 2 points.
This drill is scored with only 6 required shots. Extra shots are not allowed for leaderboard scoring because the purpose of this drill is round count control, proactive reload timing, and taking the next action immediately after firing the required number of rounds.
Any slide-lock reload means the run does not count for official scoring. The goal is to reload before the gun tells you to.
If you shoot this drill completely from concealment, remove 1.5 seconds from your final time as a handicap bonus.
Safety note: Any unsafe firearm handling voids the run.
Summary: 2nd Servings is a rifle transition and reload drill built around repeating the same two-target shooting problem in reverse.
The first half begins and ends on the farther 20-yard target. After the mandatory reload, the second half begins and ends on the closer 7-yard target.
This drill tests your ability to change gears between targets at significantly different distances. The close target rewards aggressive transitions and fast shooting, while the farther target demands a more disciplined visual confirmation before each shot.
The mandatory reload divides the drill into two separate six-round sequences, but the work does not stop when the first magazine leaves the rifle. A clean run requires the shooter to finish the first sequence, perform the reload efficiently, and immediately return to the correct target without hesitation.
The challenge is balancing speed with accountability. Take what the close target gives you, respect the difficulty of the farther target, and make sure you are ready for 2nd Servings.
